Cleanings & Examinations

Regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings are essential to maintaining healthy teeth and gums. A proactive approach to oral health helps prevent decay and plaque buildup while reducing the risk of more serious concerns over time.

Examinations at Mentone Family Dentist go beyond routine care, providing a comprehensive assessment to detect potential issues early. With advanced technology and a holistic approach, our check-ups and cleans are thorough, comfortable, and tailored to individual needs.

Our Approach to Check-Ups & Cleans

Dental Examinations

A dental examination involves more than just looking for cavities. Every check-up includes a full assessment of teeth, gums, and overall oral health, helping detect early signs of issues like enamel wear, inflammation, and bite imbalances.

Advanced diagnostic tools may be used to provide a more precise evaluation, including:

  • CBCT Imaging for detailed 3D scans of teeth and bone structure.

  • Trios 3D Scanner for highly accurate digital impressions, eliminating the need for traditional moulds.

  • Phase Contrast Leica Microscope to detect bad bacteria in mouth which is earliest sign of future issues that might not be visible otherwise.

Medical history and any concerns are always taken into account, ensuring your treatment plan supports your overall well-being.

Dental Cleaning with Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)

Traditional cleans focus on plaque and tartar removal only visible to eyes, but Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) with our Airflow machine goes further for deeper, more effective cleans. GBT is a cutting-edge, minimally invasive cleaning approach that removes harmful bacteria while improving gum health and helping to prevent disease.

How GBT Works

Biofilm Detection: A special dye is placed on the teeth which highlights bacteria and plaque buildup, otherwise easily missed in traditional cleans.

  • Gentle Airflow® & Piezon® Ultrasonic Cleaning: EMS Airflow® technology removes biofilm and tartar without harsh scraping, making it suitable for all types of teeth.

  • Targeted Ozone Therapy: Where bacterial imbalances (dysbiosis) are present, ozonated water eliminates harmful bacteria while promoting healing naturally.

  • Personalised Maintenance Plan: Unlike the standard six-month check-up model, GBT frequency is tailored to individual needs.

The Benefits of GBT Airflow Cleaning vs. Traditional Cleaning

  • More Effective: Targets plaque and bacteria at a deeper level.

  • Minimally Invasive & Comfortable: No harsh scraping—ideal for sensitive teeth.

  • Better for Gum Health: Helps prevent inflammation and bacterial imbalances.

  • Fully Personalised: Cleaning schedules are adjusted based on your individual health needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Examinations are an important opportunity for us to check in with you, see how you are doing, and make sure that your teeth are healthy. We want to catch problems when they are small and can be treated easily.

Unfortunately, by the time you are in pain, simple measures are usually no longer effective. Regular examinations allow us to identify problems early, and keep your teeth healthy and beautiful.

Dental X-rays help in detecting issues that might not be visible during a regular dental examination, such as cavities between teeth, problems below the gum line, or infection/abscess in the jawbone.

Both manual and electric toothbrushes can be effective when used correctly. Electric toothbrushes make it easier to clean hard-to-reach areas and generally are more effective at removing plaque and preventing gingivitis. We recommend electric toothbrushes for our patients.

Tooth sensitivity can arise from enamel erosion, gum recession, or cavities. Using desensitising toothpaste, adopting a soft-bristled toothbrush, and avoiding acidic foods can help alleviate the discomfort. It's crucial to consult with your dentist for a proper diagnosis and tailored treatment recommendations.

Absolutely. Dental anxiety is common, and we strive to create a comfortable and reassuring environment for our patients. Communication is key; let us know your concerns, and we'll work together to make your experience as pleasant as possible.

Is Tooth Sensitivity Normal? Why It Might Be More Serious Than You Think

That twinge when drinking cold water? It may be common, but it’s not normal.

If you’ve ever winced while sipping something icy or brushing your teeth, you’re not alone. Persistent sensitivity could be a sign of a deeper issue.

What Is Tooth Sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity, or dentinal hypersensitivity, happens when the inner layer of your tooth—called dentine—becomes exposed. This layer contains tiny channels (dentinal tubules) that lead directly to the nerve. When exposed, triggers like cold, sweet, or acidic food and drink can reach the nerve and cause sharp, sudden discomfort.

Oil Pulling: Benefits, Myths, and Oral Health Facts

You’ve probably heard of oil pulling—an ancient Ayurvedic practice that’s gained popularity in modern wellness circles. But what is it exactly, and can it really improve your oral health?

Let’s unpack the facts, separate the myths, and explore how oil pulling can (and can’t) support your oral health.

What Is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling involves swishing a tablespoon of oil in your mouth for 15–20 minutes, usually first thing in the morning. Coconut, sesame, and black seed oil are the most commonly used. The idea is that the oil binds to bacteria, toxins, and debris, which are then expelled when you spit the ...

Cleanings & Examinations Technology

EMS Airflow - Guided Biofilm Therapy

EMS Airflow is an advanced teeth cleaning technology which is gentler, quicker, and more effective than other teeth cleaning methods.

This technology uses air and a fine powder to remove stains and calculus, cleaning and polishing in one single procedure. No more scrapers, brushes or abrasive pastes!

Airflow technology is able to clean deeper and more effectively than other teeth cleaning methods, is safe for natural teeth, restorations and implants, and is minimally invasive and pain free.

Patients are offered the option for Guided Biofilm Therapy (the airflow machine) when they book a routine checkup and clean.

Trios 3D Scanner

Digital intra-oral 3D scanners, or digital impression technology allows us to take dental impressions that are touch-free and 100% precise. Digital impressions are faster and more comfortable than traditional methods (no more messy putty in trays).

Our Trios 5 3D scanner is a small wand shaped tool that uses a laser to scan your teeth, gums and bite, generating a 3D model on screen in real-time. The entire process only takes a few minutes.

Using the Trios 5, we can capture highly accurate 3D images of your mouth enabling us to plan your treatments with greater precision and accuracy.

Incorporating yearly scans into your dental examination allows us to monitor your oral health more comprehensively. We can detect subtle changes or issues that might not be visible through traditional methods, ensuring that potential problems are addressed early, often resulting in less invasive and more cost-effective treatments. We are offering a free 3D scan for all patients – ask Dr. Eshan about getting your teeth scanned at your next visit.
