Mentone Family Dentist

Free 30-Minute New Patient Consultation

Our free consultation is a relaxed, up to 30-minute appointment for new patients who want to ask questions, understand a more holistic way of practising dentistry, and decide whether our clinic feels like the right fit.

You’ll have time to talk through your concerns, past dental experiences, health priorities, and what you’re hoping to achieve. One of our dentists may look in your mouth and take a 3D digital scan with our TRIOS or conduct a complimentary oral microbial screening.

This allows us to show you what we’re seeing in your mouth and your oral bacteria moving under the microscope. This is for education and awareness only – not for diagnosis or treatment planning.

This consultation visit does not replace a full dental examination. It is not designed to diagnose conditions, give a detailed written treatment plan, or start treatment. For that, you’ll still need a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment or a limited/problem-focused exam.

The free consultation is simply a safe, no-obligation way to:

  • Ask questions

  • Understand our holistic, tech-driven approach

  • Get a sense of whether we’re the right match for your ongoing oral care

What happens during the consult?

In a typical up to 30-minute new-patient free consult, you can expect some or all of the following:

We listen to your story and concerns - This is the time to share what’s brought you in; fears, past experiences, health issues, or specific questions and an opportunity to talk about things like materials, holistic or biological approaches, and long-term health goals you may have. Shared decision-making literature in dentistry and medicine highlights that listening carefully to a patient’s story is a key part of high-quality, person-centred care.

Brief visual look in your mouth - The dentist may do a quick visual check to get a general idea of what’s happening. There is no detailed charting, gum measurements, bite analysis, or testing at this visit.

Optional digital 3D scan (TRIOS) - When helpful, a 3D TRIOS scan may be taken to show your teeth and bite on a screen. This is used to support discussion and education; not as a complete diagnostic record on its own.

Optional complimentary microbial screening (time-permitting) - A tiny plaque sample is placed under a phase-contrast microscope, so you can see your own oral bacteria and biofilm moving in real time. This is an educational tool to highlight the types of bacteria in your mouth; it is not a diagnostic test and is not used on its own to plan treatment.

Q&A and next steps -  This is the time to ask about possible pathways (comprehensive exam, periodontal care, orthodontic opinions, restorative options, holistic support, etc.). We may discuss rough fee estimates or ranges, but do not provide a detailed itemised treatment plan.

Together we will decide which type of paid clinical appointment makes the most sense next:

  • Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment, or

  • Limited/problem-focused exam (for a specific concern or emergency)

What’s not included in the consult?

To keep expectations clear and remain within AHPRA guidelines, this free appointment does not include:

  • A full Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment

  • Detailed charting or gum measurements

  • Bite analysis or occlusal diagnosis

  • Routine x-rays, CBCT scans, or other radiology

  • Saliva or microbiome testing beyond the optional visual microscope screening

  • Any treatment (such as cleans, fillings, extractions, laser treatment, etc.)

  • Prescriptions, medical certificates, or referral letters

  • A full written treatment plan or firm, itemised quote

If it becomes clear that you have an urgent problem (pain, swelling, trauma, broken tooth) or you request immediate care, we will discuss converting or re-booking you into a limited/emergency exam. In that case, normal examination fees, x-rays, and necessary tests will apply and will be quoted before you agree to proceed.

Who is this appointment for?

A free 30-minute consultation is ideal if you:

  • Are a new patient and want to understand a more holistic, biologically minded approach

  • Feel anxious or unsure and want to “meet the team” before committing to a paid exam

  • Have complex medical or health concerns and want to understand how dental care can be integrated with your broader health

  • Are exploring bigger decisions (for example, root canal vs extraction, rebuilding worn teeth, orthodontic pathways) and want to hear how we think before you decide on next steps

If you are in pain, swollen, or think you have an infection, we recommend booking a  limited/problem-focused exam instead of a free consult, so that proper diagnosis and treatment can be started.
