Periodontal Disease Prevention & Treatment

Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease (periodontitis) is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and supporting bone structure, leading to inflammation, gum recession, and even tooth loss. In Australia, nearly 30% of adults suffer from moderate to severe periodontitis, a condition linked to heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and other systemic conditions.

Early detection and treatment of periodontitis are crucial to preventing long-term damage and support your overall wellbeing. TwinLight® Periodontal Therapy (TPT) is an advanced, laser-based treatment that removes infection, promotes healing, and restores gum health—without the need for traditional surgery in most cases.

What is Gum Disease and Why is Early Treatment Important?

Periodontitis is caused by an imbalance in oral bacteria (dysbiosis), leading to gum inflammation and progressive tissue breakdown. If left untreated, this condition can result in:

  • Gum recession and tooth mobility
  • Loss of bone structure supporting the teeth
  • Persistent bad breath and inflammation, pain and sensitivity
  • Increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and other systemic conditions

A comprehensive periodontal assessment along with microbial analysis can help identify bacterial imbalances early, allowing for targeted treatment before serious damage occurs.

Our Approach to Treating Gum Disease

TwinLight® Therapy combines two laser wavelengths (Nd:YAG and Er:YAG) to remove infection and promote healing. This precise, non-invasive approach effectively disinfects gum pockets, preserves healthy tissue, and encourages natural gum reattachment.

Comprehensive Periodontal Assessment

Every treatment begins with a detailed periodontal exam, where gum pocket depths are measured, signs of inflammation and bone loss are assessed, and bacterial imbalances are identified using our Phase Contrast Leica Microscope. If necessary, an Oral Microbiome Mapping Test may be recommended to detect specific bacterial strains contributing to dysbiosis.

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) & Ozone Treatment

Before laser treatment, Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is performed using our EMS Airflow® system to gently remove plaque, tartar, and biofilm from the teeth and gums. Ozonated water is applied to reduce harmful bacteria and promote natural healing.

TwinLight® FotonaLaser Treatment

TwinLight® therapy uses two different LASER wavelengths to precisely disinfect and remove infected tissues from gum pockets targeting disease while preserving healthy gum tissue; remove bacterial toxins from the roots of the teeth and also bio-stimulate (photobiomodulation) the tissues. This therapy helps to stimulate soft tissue regeneration, encourage the gums to reattach to the teeth, and boosts healing which may not always occur using traditional methods.

Supportive Periodontal Therapy (Every 3 Months)

To maintain gum health and prevent reinfection, regular periodontal maintenance is recommended every three months. These sessions include GBT cleanings with ozone therapy and laser disinfection to keep the oral environment balanced and prevent bacteria from recolonising. Continuous monitoring with microbial analysis helps ensure long-term treatment success.

Holistic Considerations

Gum disease is linked to heart disease, diabetes, and chronic inflammation, as harmful bacteria from infected gums can enter the bloodstream. Identifying and treating gum disease early can help reduce systemic health risks.

A balanced oral microbiome is key to long-term health. Instead of just eliminating bacteria, healthy nutritious diet, good hygiene and other lifestyle modifications (eg quitting smoking)  are necessary for long term outcomes.

Untreated gum disease can cause bone and gum loss, impacting tooth stability and facial structure. Laser therapy stimulates regeneration, while ozone therapy promotes healing. By using minimally invasive, regenerative treatments, this approach supports both oral and whole-body health.

Alternative Treatments for Gum Disease

For some patients, alternative or additional treatment options may be recommended:

  • Scaling & Root Planing (Deep Cleaning) – A traditional method to remove plaque and bacteria, may be suitable for mild to moderate gum disease cases.

  • Pocket Reduction Surgery – A surgical approach used for advanced gum disease cases.

  • Bone & Tissue Grafts – This may be used in severe cases to regenerate lost gum and bone structure caused by periodontitis.

  • Oral Microbiome Mapping & Targeted Ozone Therapy – Helps restore bacterial balance without invasive procedures.

A consultation helps determine the best treatment plan for your gum health needs.
